The Latest Google Research Shows how a Machine Learning ML Model that Provides a Weak Hint can Significantly Improve the Performance of an Algorithm in Bandit-like Settings

In many applications, decisions are frequently made based on requests that come in an online fashion, which means that not all of the problem’s constraints are originally understood, and there is inherent uncertainty regarding significant components of the situation. The multi-armed or n-armed bandit problem, where a finite amount of resources must be divided across various options to maximize their projected gain, is a particularly well-known problem within this domain. The primary distinguishing characteristic of these problems is that each choice’s attributes are only partially recognized at the time of allocation and may be understood more fully over time or as resources are allocated.

A navigation app that responds to driver queries is a nice illustration of the multi-armed bandit problem. The alternative choices in this scenario are a set of precomputed alternative routes in navigation. The driver’s preferences for route features and potential delays due to traffic and road conditions are unpredictable parameters that affect user satisfaction. The “regret,” which is the difference between the reward of the best choice and the reward acquired by the algorithm across all T rounds, is used to compute the algorithm’s performance over T rounds versus the optimal action in retrospect.

Online machine learning researches these conditions and offers several methods for making decisions in uncertain situations. Although existing solutions achieve sublinear regret, their algorithms only optimize for worst-case scenarios and ignore the plethora of real-world data that could otherwise be utilized to train machine learning models, which could aid in algorithm design.

Working on this problem statement, Google Research researchers recently demonstrated in their work “Online Learning and Bandits with Queried Hints” how an ML model that offers a weak hint can dramatically enhance the performance of an algorithm in bandit-like conditions. The researchers explained that numerous current models that have been trained using pertinent training data could produce extremely accurate outcomes. However, their technique guarantees remarkable performance even when the model feedback is provided as a less direct weak hint. The user can ask the computer to predict which of the two alternate choices will be best.

Returning to the case of the navigation app, the algorithm can choose between two routes and ask an ETA model which of the two is faster, or it can show the user two ways with contrasting features and let them select the safer bet. In terms of dependence on T, using such a method increased the bandits’ remorse on an exponential scale. Additionally, the paper will also be presented at the esteemed ITCS 2023 conference.

The algorithm uses the popular upper confidence bound algorithm (UCB) as its foundation. The UCB method keeps track of an alternative option’s average reward up to the current point as a score and adds an optimism parameter that shrinks the more times the choice has been selected. This maintains a steady balance between exploration and exploitation. To enable the model to choose the superior option out of two, the method applies the UCB scores to pairs of alternatives. The maximum reward from the two selections determines the reward in each round. The algorithm then looks at all of the pairs’ UCB scores and selects the pair with the highest score. The ML auxiliary pairwise prediction model is then given these pairs as input and returns the best result.

In terms of theoretical assurances, the algorithm created by Google researchers accomplishes significant advancements, including an exponential improvement in the dependence of regret on the time horizon. The researchers compared their method to a baseline model that uses the conventional UCB approach to select alternatives to send to the pairwise comparison model. It was noted that their method swiftly determines the optimum decision without accumulating regret, in contrast to the UCB baseline model. In a nutshell, the researchers explored how a pairwise comparison ML model might offer weak hints that can be incredibly effective in situations like the bandits settings. The researchers believe that this is just the beginning and that their model of hint can be used to solve more intriguing challenges in machine learning and the combinatorial optimization domain.

Road Robots Are Coming to the Rescue

DEVELOPING CARS THAT can drive without a human is a unique challenge. There are many kinds of events that fully autonomous vehicles have to be prepared to handle in milliseconds, and mistakes can have serious consequences. Solving these problems requires innovation across a number of fields, such as AI and machine learning, advanced sensors, simulation software that can mimic real-world driving, and computing frameworks to evaluate the system’s performance.

In 2007, I joined the Urban Challenge that was run by the US Defense Advanced Research Project Agency (Darpa) to test and develop autonomous vehicles (AVs). I vividly remember the first moment our car, Junior, drove by itself in the parking lot using software I was working on just hours before. That was a watershed moment for me. It became clear that this was the most impactful and interesting engineering problem of our age, one I’ve dedicated all my time to ever since.

Over the last decade, the autonomous vehicle industry has solved many technical challenges. For instance, since 2020, residents in the East Valley of Phoenix, in Arizona, have been able to open the Waymo One app, hail a ride, and get where they need to go in a vehicle without a human driver. It’s hard to overstate how significant that breakthrough is. AVs are now entering a new phase of scaling and expansion—one that will make 2023 a pivotal year in which AVs can start to benefit more people in more places.

The progress the industry will make in 2023 will be the result of years of testing and deploying AVs across different geographies. As a result, the AV industry is now focusing on mastering generalizable driving technology as it moves toward scaling up commercial deployments. This is important, because AVs don’t make commercial sense if they can’t easily operate in different places. In the United States, the same technology needs to be able to handle San Francisco’s traffic density, hills, and fog; Phoenix’s scorching temperatures and monsoon season; New York’s cold winters and heavy traffic; and the highways of Los Angeles. It also needs to be able to operate different types of vehicles safely and consistently.

In 2023, this will lead to AV deployments across multiple markets. Over the years, many AV companies—we at Waymo, and others at Aurora, Cruise, Motional, Nuro, and Oxbotica to name just a few—have been making tremendous progress in cities as diverse as Las Vegas and San Francisco in the US and Oxford in England. Given the fundamental complexity of the problem, consolidation in the AV industry is inevitable and will continue. However, building on the shared technical progress by the core of the industry, we will also see rapid and exciting expansion. Riders in San Francisco and the cities of Wuhan and Chongqing in China can already also hail cars with no human driver in the front seat. In the coming year and beyond, we will see the industry enter a new phase as fully-autonomous ride-hailing services expand rapidly to new markets.

Trucking will also see progress. Autonomous trucks are already hauling thousands of tons of goods for Wayfair, UPS, FedEx, Coca Cola—and even the Girl Scouts of North Texas. In 2023, autonomous big rigs will become a more common sight, especially in Texas and Arizona. AV companies will sign more partnerships with carriers, freight brokers, and major consumer brands. Freight volumes will increase, demonstrating how AVs could help untangle supply chains and backfill the immense shortage of truck drivers. (According to the International Road Transport Union, the world was short more than 2.6 million truck drivers in 2021). If you live in the Southwestern United States, there is a good chance that your new coffee table, sofa, or winter sweater will be transported autonomously..

Education Times HomeNewsroomIIT Madras researchers develop Data Analytics appr ... IIT Madras researchers develop Data Analytics approach to detect petroleum and hydrocarbon saturated zone

Combining different statistical approaches to obtain the subsurface rock structure, the IIT-M’s research team used their method to detect hydrocarbon saturated zone in the sandstone-based reservoir at 2.3 km underground in the Tipam formation of the Upper Assam basin.

The researchers used this approach to analyse data obtained from seismic surveys and well logs from the North Assam region known for its petroleum reserve. They were able to get accurate information on the rock type distribution and the hydrocarbon saturation zones at such depth zones of 2.3km.

Characterising underground rock structures is a challenging task. Seismic survey methods and well log data are used to understand the structure underneath the earth’s surface. In a seismic survey, acoustic vibrations are sent through the ground. As the waves hit various rock layers, they are reflected with different characteristics. The reflected waves are recorded and the underground rock structure is imaged using the reflection data. The well logs contain details of various layers of the earth seen when digging an oil well.

This research was led by Rajesh R Nair, faculty, Petroleum Engineering programme, Department of Ocean Engineering, IIT Madras. The findings were published in the prestigious journal NATURE Scientific Reports. The paper was co-authored by M Nagendra Babu and Venkatesh Ambati researchers of IIT Madras along with Rajesh R Nair.

Since the discovery of the Digboi oilfield in Upper Assam more than 100 years ago, the Assam-Arakan has come to be characterised as a ‘category-I’ basin to denote that they have significant amounts of hydrocarbon reserves. Petroleum is found in the pore space of a hydrocarbon-bearing underground rock formations. The identification of petroleum reservoirs in the oil-rich basins of Assam requires a survey of the rock structure of this region and the detection of hydrocarbon saturation zones in them.

Explaining the technical aspects of the study, Rajesh Nair said, “Seismic inversion is a process that is commonly used to transform the seismic reflection data into a quantitative rock-property description of a reservoir. Our team used a type of seismic inversion, called ‘Simultaneous Prestack Seismic Inversion’ (SPSI). This analysis provided the spatial distribution of petrophysical properties in the seismic image. Our team then combined this with other data analytics tools such as target correlation coefficient analysis (TCCA), Poisson impedance inversion, and Bayesian classification to successfully obtain the underground rock and soil structure of the region.”

In the course of this work, the researchers also introduced a notable attribute named ‘Poisson impedance’ (PI) in their analysis.PI was used to identify the fluid content in the sandstone reservoir. Their findings also proved that ‘Poisson impedance’ (PI) was more effective in estimating hydrocarbon zone than conventional attributes.

Nair added that India’s mega offshore bidding process of 26 blocks for producing oil, and gas is presently ongoing and such new technologies for finding new discoveries will boost the oil and gas business enormously.

‘Is It Art?’ Scholars Test Viewers’ Perception Of Art Vs. Scientific Data

Inspired by Marcel Duchamp’s Readymades, a group of European scholars set out to explore the question “Is it Art?” as it pertains to ambiguity and aesthetics.

The Dada trailblazer challenged long-standing assumptions about what art should be, and how it should be made. Eschewing representation of objects in painting, Duchamp began presenting mass-produced objects as art and giving them titles.

“An ordinary object [could be] elevated to the dignity of a work of art by the mere choice of an artist,” Duchamp said.

Building on the artist’s experiment, the scholars specifically asked “do the perceptions of the viewers differ if they assume that they are looking at a piece of art instead of a non-artistic image?”

Frank Papenmeier (Eberhard Karls Universität Tübingen), Gerald Dagit and Christoph Wagner (Universität Regensburg), and Stephan Schwan (Leibniz-Institut für Wissensmedien, Tübingen, Germany) presented viewers a set of ambiguous abstract paintings and similar looking scientific images and declared them to be either artworks or pictures from scientific publications, seeking to determine the impact on the viewers’ gaze, behavior, and aesthetic judgments.

Recent models of aesthetic perception and aesthetic judgments assume a close interplay between bottom-up and top-down processes, the scholars note. Picture processing is triggered by the characteristics of a given image (such as shapes, colors, and formal compositions used to depicted objects, persons, and scenes), as well as the context in which the viewing experience takes place.

New AI Algorithms Streamline Data Processing for Space-based Instruments

SNAPSHOT

A team of NASA personnel and contractors has prototyped a new set of algorithms that will enable instruments in space to process data more efficiently. Using these algorithms, space-based remote sensors will be able to provide the most important data to scientists on the ground more quickly and may also be able to autonomously determine which Earth phenomena are the most important to observe.

Earth-observing instruments can gather a world’s worth of information each day. But transforming that raw data into actionable knowledge is a challenging task, especially when instruments have to decide for themselves which data points are most important.

“There are volcanic eruptions, wildfires, flooding, harmful algal blooms, dramatic snowfalls, and if we could automatically react to them, we could observe them better and help make the world safer for humans,” said Steve Chien, a JPL Fellow and Head of Artificial Intelligence at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory.

Engineers and researchers from JPL and the companies Qualcomm and Ubotica are developing a set of AI algorithms that could help future space missions process raw data more efficiently. These AI algorithms allow instruments to identify, process, and downlink prioritized information automatically, reducing the amount of time it would take to get information about events like a volcanic eruption from space-based instruments to scientists on the ground.

These AI algorithms could help space-based remote sensors make independent decisions about which Earth phenomena are most important to observe, such as wildfires.

“It’s very difficult to direct a spacecraft when we’re not in contact with it, which is the vast majority of the time. We want these instruments to respond to interesting features automatically,” said Chien

Chien prototyped the algorithms using commercially available advanced computers onboard the International Space Station (ISS). During several different experiments, Chien and his team investigated how well the algorithms ran on Hewlett Packard Enterprise’s Spaceborne Computer-2 (SBC-2), a traditional rack server computer, as well as on embedded computers.

These embedded computers include the Snapdragon 855 processor, previously used in cell phones and cars, and the Myriad X processor, which has been used in terrestrial drones and low Earth orbit satellites.

Including ground tests using PPC-750 and Sabertooth processors – which are traditional spacecraft processors – these experiments validated more than 50 image processing, image analysis, and response scheduling AI software modules.

The experiments showed these embedded commercial processors are very suitable for space-based remote sensing, which will make it much easier for other scientists and engineers to integrate the processors and AI algorithms into new missions.

The full results of these experiments were published in a series of three papers at the 2022 IEEE Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium, which can be accessed through the links below.

Forget ChatGPT! ChatSonic Will Solve All Your Coding Problems in Minutes

You can forget ChatGPT now, ChatSonic will solve all your coding problems in minutes

The main similarity between ChatGPT and ChatSonic is that both employs AI to carry out their duties. ChatSonic uses rule-based algorithms integrated with machine learning, whereas ChatGPT uses a machine learning-based approach to language processing. This sets ChatSonic apart from the others in terms of comprehension and response, providing it with a flexible advantage. Simply expressed, Chat Sonic’s rule-based approach, in contrast to ChatGPT, enables it to handle more data with user input based on pre-defined rules and patterns. The two of them are both utilized to fix coding issues, but you can now forget about ChatGPT because ChatSonic will solve all your coding problems in minutes.

ChatGPT:

An AI-powered chatbot called ChatGPT has been made available for public testing by Open AI, a research company that specializes in artificial intelligence. According to the business, researchers have taught the ChatGPT to speak to users in a “conversational fashion,” opening it up to a larger range of users. ChatGPT can also assist in quickly writing programs for websites and applications. Many users on Twitter shared their experiences with ChatGPT after testing the AI-powered system and claimed that the chatbot was able to quickly resolve complicated coding-related problems.

“A transformer-based model is trained to utilize a huge corpus of conversational data in ChatGPT. Using this model, responses to user input are then generated that resemble human responses, enabling genuine interactions with a virtual assistant.”

“A natural language processing (NLP) model called ChatGPT was created by OpenAI. The model is transformer-based and was developed using a sizable corpus of conversational data. It is made to respond to user input with human-like responses, enabling conversational interactions with a virtual assistant “.

According to OpenAI, the ChatGPT chatbot can explain complicated subjects in layman’s terms. Examples given on the website include “Explain quantum computing in simple terms” and “Do you have any original birthday party ideas for a 10-year-old?” Beyond normal inquiries, the ChatGPT can assist users in resolving coding-related issues. Numerous tweets from users testing ChatGPT’s features can be found if you simply search for them on Twitter.

ChatSonic:

Built on the GPT-3.5 architecture, ChatSonic advertises itself as an enhanced iteration of open-source models and algorithms. For companies wishing to enhance their customer support operations, ChatSonic is the best option because it has received training on customer service data. Additionally, handling client inquiries, helping with transactions, and facilitating website navigation are all made simpler by ChatSonic. Live chat, email, and social media are just a few of the platforms that it is designed to interface with.

By using Google’s knowledge network to deliver the most recent information on events and topics that are currently taking place, ChatSonic may serve as your go-to conversational AI chatbot tool. This conversational AI platform, ChatSonic, uses NLP and machine learning to deliver

ChatGPT vs ChatSonic:

ChatGPT can produce language that resembles that of a human being based on training data, but it may not always provide responses that are entirely natural or comprehensible. This is because the GPT model’s architecture places less emphasis on comprehending the complete meaning and intent of the text and more on predicting the next word in a sequence based on the context of the preceding words.

Contrarily, ChatSonic is designed to recognize user input and react to it more consistently and naturally. Using a combination of rule-based algorithms and machine learning, it comprehends the meaning and intent behind user input and can provide responses that sound more human and natural.

Conclusion: Both ChatGPT and ChatSonic have benefits and drawbacks in terms of effectiveness and precision. ChatGPT can produce text that looks like it was written by a human rapidly and effectively, but the results are not always reliable or intelligible. ChatSonic can comprehend user input more naturally and coherently, although it can need more training and modification to fulfil certain needs.
